The Upper Room with Jesus

Oh, the whirlwind that the disciples experienced firsthand
with Jesus present! Having washed their feet in humility and example, he later
spoke of coming betrayal and desertion. He then gave the disciples a new
commandment to love one another and so prove to the world that they are his
disciples. Now, in the midst of sharing eternal assurance, he proclaims himself
to be the one and only way to the Father. So much to take in—from service to
conviction, from loving proof to eternal assurance and personal relationship.
Finally, he shares the source, the power, the means and the guarantee of all
that he has asked them to fulfill: the promise of the Holy Spirit, the one who
will be "another Helper, to be with you forever." (John 14:16)
Jesus' promise to the disciples in the Upper Room came true
for them at Pentecost. His promise to us came true when we believed and received
Jesus as Lord and Savior. Paul speaks of this promise in Ephesians 1:13-14:
"In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your
salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who
is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the
praise of his glory." In the whirlwind of life, dwell in the Upper Room
with him, trusting this "guarantee" of life eternal, lovingly proving
we are his—forever.
