Holy Week–Monday

Holy Week—Monday

Monday Reading
  • Matthew 21: 12–22
  • Luke 19:45–46

Monday Discussion

Jesus shows his authority over created things (cursing the fig tree that won’t bear fruit) and in the temple (where God’s presence resided). Jesus judges both for the same reason—failure to bear fruit. The fig tree was not fulfilling its purpose and the temple was not fulfilling its purpose; in turn, both are cursed as Jesus demonstrates his authority over them. When the chief priests and scribes witness people praising Jesus, they are indignant.
  • Why is it important that Jesus has authority over all of creation?
  • What is significant about Jesus seeking to restore the temple to a house of prayer from what it had become, a den of robbers?
  • Why couldn’t the religious leaders stand seeing Jesus receive praise in the temple?
