Holy Week – Tuesday

Holy Week – Tuesday

Tuesday Reading
Our devotion today will focus on Jesus’ teaching in the temple. His teaching on the Mount of Olives, which occurred later the same day, is included for additional reading.
  • Jesus in the Temple
    • Luke 20:1-8
      • This can also be read from Mark 11:27-33 and Matthew 21:23-27
    • Matthew 22:34-40
  • Jesus at the Mount of Olives:
    • Luke 21:5-36
    • Matthew 24:1 - 25:46
    • Mark 13:1-37

Tuesday Discussion
As Jesus teaches in the temple on Tuesday, his authority is directly challenged by the religious leaders—chief priests, scribes, and elders. Although the leaders knew that Jesus was praised by the people and considered a prophet, they refused to accept Jesus and his teachings. They tried to silence Jesus but failed, so they shifted tactics and tried to trick Jesus into teaching something against the Scriptures. Of course, that didn’t work either! The best example is in Matthew 22:34-40, where Jesus avoids the trap of the leaders and helps us understand what it really means to obey God—to love God and love people. Even when Jesus is being attacked, he still taught God’s people God’s truths with authority!

Tuesday Questions
  • Why were the religious leaders so determined to stop Jesus?
    • Why were the religious leaders so unsuccessful at stopping Jesus?
  • How does Jesus’ teaching to love God and love our neighbors help us understand what God is really like?
    • Why is it so hard to love God and love people sometimes? How can remembering God’s love for you help you love other people?
